I kept her, as an act of humanity, for she was only five years old,  and of no use to me, fed and clothed her, and treated her kindly, and I think it would be great injustice to the child, to give her in charge to either of her Aunts, who would do nothing for her, when here, and were too lazy to do anything for themselves, particularly the one who claims her, for she had two children when she left here, and lost them, I believe from neglect.  I understood, she was kept some time on Belle Isle, because she would do nothing for her support.  She was afterward driven from several places in Fluvanna, where she was raised.  She is evidently prompted by a disposition to make the child profitable to her, and not by natural affection.
