Captain Lewis declared in my hearing today that Major Smith was a very frank and good natured man as whenever he made out a report or dispatch for head quarters he always come across the way and read it aloud to let the boys know what he was doing.

The tavern keeper Mr. Sleet informs me that the Major gave him a bale of hay to pay his whiskey bill of three dollars.
