Mr. Wm. J. Winder says "I heard a letter read in Maj. Smith's office about loyal men which gave me offence and that was the great reason why I signed the paper.  Also the general opinion of the freed people which is I think unanimous against him, I know nothing about him except by rumor, I have no reason to believe Maj. Smith would deprive me of my rights as a loyal man. 
N.B. Trader. says "My name is there as a preference.  I am against Smith because of the letter he wrote about Dixon.  If reports are true he is more friendly to rebels than to Union men.  As to drunkenness I can say nothing" &c James W. Marchant says "I signed the petition because most of the citizens were against Smith-  Do not know any facts to support it" Leroy Bohannon said "Do not know Smith personally: have no knowledge of the matter except from rumor at Merchant's store nowhere else.  I had just as soon have Smith as anyone.  I think a great many signed it      carelessly and from persuasion: and so on throughout. I could find no one who professed to know anything about the matter, nor would any one acknowledge the
