persistent reading and re-reading of the letter accompanied by explanation and illustration, that their misapprehension of it was removed.  They went away expressing themselves as ready to forget any past difficulty and to to all in their power to co-operate with Mr Smith in future. 
 
Mr. Smith will I believe be more careful in regard to his manner, and to some careless and ill-advised expression touching the colored people of which he may have made use.  As to the P.S. of the petition written as it is anonymously and containing as it does charges of a grave character against an officer of unsullied reputation, I shall pass it by without notice unless you particularly direct a report in regard to it.  I will merely say that the investigation of the charges already disposed of incidentally revealed the fact that these were of a similar character.  

In conclusion, I believe Mr. Smith to be one of the most capable and efficient business and executive officers in my Sub Dist, that the charges against him are unfounded and that
