Richmond Va July 7th, 1867 To, Capt. Cook Sir, I have the honor to appeal to you for "Transportation" to St. Louis Mo, for the following reasons viz: I, Thomas Walker (blacksmith) having voluntarily left the "Confederate Army" during the "Rebellion" and joined the Union Army, thereby losing my means, so that I was necessitated to fall back on my trade, since the close of the "War" now find that political prejudice prevents me getting employment in this City. Trusting you will be good enough to furnish me "Transportation" to the "West" so as to earn an honest living for myself & family, Very Respectfully your obd't servant Thomas Walker
