New York, March 27, 1867
ROOM 16, No. 39 PARK ROW.

Major Gen. O.O. Howard,
Commissioner of Refugees &c

My dear Sir,
Teachers not of our denomination but efficient and trustworthy, have occupied the meeting house of the Colored Baptist Church of Williamsburg Va. since the close of the war.
The foundations of the house, or the supports of the floor are giving way so that the galleries are settling and the building will not be safe to occupy during another year.
The bearer, J. M. Dawson, a worthy brother asks us to repair the house and use it, but I have advised him to accept your offer to repair the house and to cooperate with your Bureau in encouraging the school for at least another year.
I have no doubt but that your teachers these engaged, and your officers in that District will concur in this advice.
I am truly yours &c
J. S. Backus
Cor Secy
