On the premises of Mr. Hugh Graham of Floyd County, and on the day following, was stolen from the premises of said Graham, by some person or persons unknown. He further affirms that the horse was a broken down animal, left by Vaughn's Rebel Cavalry in the possession of Mr. John W Gibson of this county on the 13th day of April 1865. Said horse was branded U.S. and S with a figure 8 and letter C (indistinct) on the left hip. According to his account, Vaughn's Cavalry gave two broken down horses, for two good horses belonging to Mr. Gibson, and this was one of said horses. The horse being diseased, and of no service to Mr. Gibson, he gave him in charge of Mr. Spangler to cure him, and was in said Spangler's possession, when the Provost Marshall stationed at Christiansburg required all Government Horses to be registered. Mr. Spangler affirms that he received word from Mr. Gibson, that if the horse was still in his possession, he should report him, and if possible to have him registered in his Spangler's name as the said Gibson had no further use for him. Spangler affirms that being sick at the time, he sent his wife with the horse to the Provost Marshall, who refused to receive him but directed her to take the horse home and keep him. This she did, when the horse remained in his Spangler's possession until stolen. Enclosed please find affidavits accompanying a communication, received on this date from Bvt Capt. H. L. Hunt, who previous to May 23rd 1866, had supervision of affairs of the Bureau in this county — and who made an investigation of this case
