May 6 1867 Capt Mallery Dear Sir I take pleasure in answering your Letter enquiring of the post master at fishersville of the health and circumstances of Wm. H. McClane. He is Living on the Lands of Michel A Coiner three miles north of Fishersville and working for him at this time as a Farm hand doing as well as could be expected for a new beginer starting on nothing as is the case with all the colored men after having served hard masters all their lives it is my wish that Congress cut some of my Neighbors farms up and devide them out among those who have laboured hard to fill the pockets of hard masters without just compensation any further information you may want I will chearfully give by addressing me at Fishersville Augusta Cty VA Yours truly Z F Calbreath For Wm H McClane
