only way to preserve the crops it to guard them with the gun. If however those belonging to the County at the beginning of the War are thrown upon the Overseers, limited as are these means and accommodations, they will do the best they can; but they most earnestly protest against any others being thrown upon their hands. 

And as the power is not in their hands to remove those likely to become a charge to the County (as they suppose), They most earnestly entrust that the Bureau would at once remove them and thereby remove the condition of Society in which property is in places only safe which is guarded, as the undersigned knows from his own personal experience being obliged to keep armed guards on his farm near Hampton to keep his cord wood from being hauled away by loads at night, and his potatoes and corn from being taken from the field.-
