Bvt Maj Gen J M Schofield
Comdg 1st Mil Dist

Dear Sir,
May I claim the priveledge to ask at your hand, special Rations for myself wife and child I have no earthly means to live without your assistance and I would be unwilling to ask this favor did I not feel that I had done all in my power during the Rebellion to aid my Country and to do all in my power for the Officers and soldiers

At the beginning of the Rebellion I was in easy circumstances and all has been swept from me in my old age. I will briefly state that Gen Dix appointed me special commissioner to the hold the election on 22nd day Decbr 1862 and to be general supervisor in this County and I can say with sincerity that I obeyed his orders I have the signatures of Gens. [[Veile?]], [[Naglu?]] and Barney. The united states held my property at the Court House for upwards of three years besides the destruction of my buildings, the estimated loss of property valued at fifteen Hundred Dollars. Judge Bowles asked off me a true statement of the condition of things and I gave him a true account by which the government was greatly benefited. I can refer you to Hon Lucius Lt Chander and L.P. Cowper Leut Gov and many other names if necessary Maj Carnes and Capt Filt issued me Rations in 1865 and I have had the support from government until 20th day of August of the present year. I am. yr. obd. Servt
