Col. S.F. Chalfin;
Asst. Adjt. Genl.
First District Va,

Colonel;
In compliance with instructions, I attended the trial of Minor F. Davis, at the Prince William Circuit Court, Judge Thomas presiding. The prisoner Davis was indicted for feloniously assaulting his Father, with intent to kill. Two witnesses were summoned for the prosecution, viz: Minor's father and John L. Davis, his cousin. Minor F. Davis would not take steps to provide witnesses, or counsel.

The Court ordered Charles Sinclair to defend him.

Davis' father was drunk, and not to be found, and the case rested upon the evidence of John L. Davis. His testimony was as follows: He had traded Mules with Minor, and on the 19th of November last, he went to the place of Minor to see his father, and went to the barn where Minor was engaged in cleaning his mule and asked Minor where the "old man" was.
