When the verdict was rendered Davis asked Mr Wilcox to whom he should pay the money and he was told to pay the clerk as the Court was in session; he replied that the money was at Wilson's Landing, and that he wanted to leave in a few days for Richmond; Mr. Wilcox then asked the clerk to make out the execution and place it at once in the hands of the Sheriff, that Davis might not be detained in the county and it was done.

The next day the Sheriff went to Wilson's Landing to meet Davis but found only a message to the effect that "when he wanted the money he had better apply to General Schofield"

Mr. Wilcox states that Davis never denied the offence and that he thanked him (Wilcox) for his action in the matter.

I would therefore recommend that the Law be allowed to take its course in this case

Very respectfully
