from my service, whereupon Col Carse addressed me a respectful note, informing me of the application & requested that I would call & see him in regard to the matter, & bring copy of Indentures if I had any; but the note was not delivered until 16 days after its date & after I had read it - Scott inquired if I would write an answer by him - I replied that I would not, as I was only requested to call & exhibit the Indentures, which I could do, although I was under no obligation to do so, in as much as I did not reside in Col Carse's district a fact which I presumed he was ignorant of but Scott & Chesley went to Col Carse on the 7th of Feb & reported to him, that I said I should send no answer, nor papers whatever, that I did not live in his district & was not accountable to him at all - whereupon Col Carse sent me by these freedmen the following peremptory order -
Dr Thos P Hoge, you will immediately upon receipt of this order, release the following named children Louisa, Bob, Blanche & Matilda.
This order admits of no delay. By Command of,
