decline a compliance with said order, because I was sure he was not aware of the fact, that I was not a resident of his district, but of Halifax City Va - & therefore not within his jurisdiction, but would call upon him Monday 11th Inst. & show the Indentures, which I did, & respectfully submitted such explanation & statements, as were proper & pertinent & did again protest against his right to adjudicate a case brought before him by two freedmen citizens of N.C. & myself a citizen of Halifax & within the Dist. of Lt Buffum - & also informed him that his predecessor Capt. Wilcox had refused to take cognizance of any cases in Halifax & Lt Buffum had refused to act in cases occurring in Pittsylvania, whereupon Col. Carse not being satisfied that he had not the right to adjudicate this case said he would write to higher authority for instructions.

I have been advised to communicate with you a full & fair statement of the case, he being your Subordinate, & would be very much obliged if you would inform me whether under the circumstances I am amenable to him.

I stated to Col. Carse that the same day that the children referred to were bound to me - Dr. Burton
