Hollingshead, a Notary Public in and for said County, residing in the City of Washington, in said District, duly commissioned and qualified, and authorized to administer oaths and affirmations in said District of Columbia, personally appeared George Fastnaught and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God. That he knows the man now in the possession of R. B. Howison, said man is in the opinion of this deponent about ten years of age, is a boy with white spot on forehead and right hind foot, and branded on the left shoulder with the letters U.S. and R. That at a Government sale of condemned horse held near the Observatory in Washington City D.C. in May 1861 he saw this said mare sold at Government sale, said mare was at the time heavy with foal. This deponent at the time purchased a Government condemned horse and neither gave or received a receipt, and did not observe any other purchases at said sale receive any receipts.
