Personally appear before me a Justice of the Peace in and for said County J. C.
Kelley who being duly sworn on his oath depose and says that he has known the bay mare in question which is claimed by Richard P. Lacey to be in the possession of William Mackey in June AD 1863. That he knew her to be in Washington from that time till December AD 1867 when the said mare was purchased by R.B. Harrison, where she has been ever since. And was in his possession when taken by authority of Richard P. Lacey in Alexandria Virginia. And at the time Mr Lacey claimed said mare he stated it was his mare. That he lost her with four others in 1863 in the summer, that this conversation took place in month of September AD 1863. That the said mare was branded. U.S. and had the letter (C) placed upon her and was so from the first time he ever saw her.
