My attention having been called to contain statements made by Mr P Haley in relation to a transaction, in which I was retained as Counsel, by Mr John E Doherty, and concerning which I know more than any other individual, except the Haly & Mr Doherty, the parties interested; I deem it proper to make known to you, to whom the matter has been reprieved for a candid & fair investigation, so much as I know concerning the truth & falsehood of the statements above referred to. Last year, about the time, of the date of the receipt, of which a copy in herewith enclosed, Mr Doherty came to my office to consult me, in relation to the manner, in which he should discharge himself from an obligation to Mr Haley, in the shape of a written promise to pay two thousand five hundred dollars. He said that soon after the evacuation Mr Haley had come to him, without any solicitation on his part, had informed him that he had the same above mentioned & had offered
