signed. He refused to do so at that time; but came back in the evening & he & his wife united in signing a receipt of which the following is a copy.

Richmond April 14th 1866
We have received of John E. Doherty, by the hands of James H. Dooley, the sum of $2500.00 (twenty five hundred dollars) in full of all claims against him & of all debts due from him to us & we hereby release him fully & entirely from all claims & obligations of any kind whatsoever.

This receipt was, by me, read to the parties before they signed their marks & had never been seen by Mr. Doherty, until after they had signed it. So far was he from using any such threats as those mentioned in the petition that he had nothing at all to do with getting the receipt, but left the whole matter in my hands; and I can safely affirm, that I did not know whether Healey was a Union Man or not. Hoping my Dear Sir that this communication will be satisfactory to all who may wish for a fair statement of the facts of the case
