and I saw no more of him. I do not know who Dudley alluded to, or who he had stabbed. About this time I saw a colored man named William Glasgo, with a swiveltree in his hand making towards where the white men were, near the main house. 

I then observed to Lieut. Ayres, who was near me; - "can you not do something to put down this now?" He replied "I have nothing to do with it, that it was the duty of the civil authorities to quell the row." I then saw a colored man named David Palmer coming up from the stable, on the right hand side of the Lawn facing the east. I noticed blood running freely down his shoulder over his coat or shirt. There were a number of blacks with him. Palmer was crying out for the "dam white son=of=a=bitch who had stabbed him." Wm Wood (colored) standing near said "there he is" and pointed towards a white man named Madison Morgan. I then went and stood on the east porch of the "Hall" and presently I saw a white man named R. S. Ayer, take hold of Madison Morgan, and lead him Morgan on the poarch. The principal portion of the whites now left the lawn and retired into the main house. The blacks came up close the house and and were very much enraged-they talked very loud and gesticulated considerable. David Palmer who had been stabbed, cried out for Mr. Morgan to come out the house to fight, saying "If the white=livered=son=of=a=bitch will come out;
