to blows if any white men are near; no matter how many they will all pile onto the Negro before inquiring into the justice of the matter. So it was in the Shandy Hall fight. The Negroes understand this and at Shandy Hall became disgusted; consequently they seeing the injustice perpetrated upon their color determined to fight it out as the authorities took no part. Some of the blacks were partly intoxicated and like the whites in the same condition were ready for the the fight. As whites rushed in they did also. Some whites advanced no doubt for the express purpose of quieting the enraged of both white and black. There were some Negroes also doing the same but the Negroes used to heavy odds and enraged at the sight of blood pooring down David Palmer's clothes (the man stabed by Dudley) and hearing exclamations from the whites of "kill the damed Negroes" they naturally thought that some of their color would be killed: they exclaimed kill the whites
