Dear Sir.

I take pleasure in writing you tis letter I know you fully by your boundless reputation as a Christian Gentleman & as God in his wise providence has seen fit to call my Wife & two little Children into that Spirit land & left me alone almost friendless, I thought that I could do no better than go to work for the good of my country & State Concequently I thought that I would ask you would you give me an appointment in the place of Reconstruction of my State? I feel that I am competent for the work that I ask you to give me to do I have the Honor to be elected to the first State Convention ever held by colored men in the State of Virginia [[strikethrough]] inspared [[/strikethrough]] inspiered by our success in that convention and guided by the holy Scripturs to ask for What we want in the [[strikethrough]] wame [[/strikethrough]] name of my Country good & the good of the people of my State I ask your honor for a situation in that Direction I am feble in health but I can travel I am now organising Republican Clubs all through this part of the state but not having sufficient Official documents I am not as successful as I would be other wise I appeal to you because I know you & I believe that you will answer my letter if nothing else My Reputation will [[have? bare?]] the strictest investigation I would tell you som thing about some of the enemies of the govenment and what they are doing even to me but as they [[strikethrough]] from [[/strikethrough]] have been reported in the
