Washington. April 12th 1867.

Genl. O.O. Howard,
Chief Freedmen's Bureau.

Dear Sir,

A letter from Mrs. Lucetta Bonton, residing near Wolftown, Madison Co. Virginia, informs me that she has in her house a colored woman with five children, who are unable to support themselves, and asks if aid cannot be obtained through your Bureau here. This woman and her children formerly belonged to Mrs. Bonton, and she has supported them ever since the surrender of Lee, but being herself in straitened circumstances she is unable to do so any longer without at least some assistance. Will you be kind enough to give this matter your special attention.

I oblige, Very Respectfully,
(signed) J.H. Lathrop.

Official copy respectfully furnished for the Asst. Commissioner of Virginia

A.P. Ketchum
Act'g Asst. Adjt. General.
