Lexington Va June 16th 1867
Alfred Lewis Freedman having been duly sworn before me J.W. Sharp Brvt Major & Military Commissioner for the County of Rockbridge Va deposeth and saith as follows.
On the morning of 16th of June 1867 at about the hour of 8 o'clock A.M. while on board the James River packet boat Marshall at the landing near Lexington Va I heard a voice, as though in suffering call out "Phil!" "Phil!" I went on shore and approached the boat Joseph C. Cabell from which the sound came. I saw Captain George Tager of that boat pressing with his left hand the throat of William J. Lyle against the side of the office window while he struck him on the right cheek violently twice with his right clenched fist and once on the right temple.
