Edward Lightfoot- colored- having been duly sworn before me J.W. Sharp Brvt. Major & Military Commissioner for the county of Rockbridge deposeth & saith as follows.

On the morning of the 16th June 1867 at about the hour of 8 A.M. while in the alley of the Joseph C. [[strikethrough]] Campbell [[/strikethrough]] Cabell supply boat I heard a noise in the Captain's Office- I went to the gangway and looked into the [[strikethrough]] cabin [[/strikethrough]] office. There I saw Captain George Zager beating William J. Lyle [[strikethrough]] ons [[/strikethrough]]. He was pressing William's neck and holding it against the cabin window with his [[strikethrough]] ri [[/strikethrough]] left hand and pounding him on the right cheek and temple with his right [[strikethrough]] hand [[/strikethrough]] clenched fist. I saw him strike two very violent blows. I also heard him tell Phil Carter that if he - Phil - had interfered he would have shot him. This was after he had quit beating William. I also heard the captain's little boy Willy beg him to stop striking him, saying that he would tell his mother.
