perfect quietness and harmony among all classes I found among the leading whites with whom I conversed a disposition to commend him for his official actions generally and yet I could not observe that he was less respected by the colored people than his predecessor. His papers and records are in good condition and evince close attention to the clerical part of his duties.

There seems a desire on the part of certain individuals to get up a prejudice against him. But I am perfectly satisfied at present that the regard felt for him by the respectable rebels of his district is really an advantage to the freedpeople as it does seem that a general harmony of interests is more desirable than the unsettled state of affairs induced always by the fostering and encouraging of petty complaints by indisonet persons. So far as I could observe Major Sharp's administration of Bureau affairs is commendable
