Capt.

I have the honor to submit the following statements of freedmen confined in the Alexandria Co. Jail, on a charge of "unlawfully and riotously assaulting, and threatening to shoot with pistols, Isaac Veitch, whilst in discharge of his duty as a constable of the said county".

Mr. Veitch, testifies that these people together with others were having a dance at a house near Fort Whipple in this county, and becoming disorderly he ordered them to preserve better order, when he was assaulted and insulted and force to leave, he went to Fort Whipple and got a military guard to arrest them, when he and the guard got to the house to make the arrest there was some confusion and resistance made, and in the melee two or three shots were fired by which one man was killed and one slightly wounded.
