|   | Charles Edwards vs | Jesse Pannel Cold | Edwards charges Jesse with having attempted to conduct a rape on his child Mary 3 1/2 years old for which he whipped Jesse & produced a warrant for Jesse's arrest - issued on the day following | Edwards ordered Jesse to go to the barn for some eggs Mary the child followed Jesse. In about a half hour the child returned crying, & told her mother that Jesse had made an attempt to commit a rape, that he had thown her down & gotten on top of her. The Dr. was called in - a few hours after. He stated that the skin was not broken, no entrance had been made - the parts were irritated, but not lacerated - that there was no blood, or other evidence that an attempt had been made, & nothing but what might have arisen from a fall. One woman testified that there was blood on her legs. | By direction of Genl Willcox the rape case was dismissed & other matter also upon Pannel's paying balance due Jesse The matter was settled satisfactorily to Jesse | 
| July 5 | Maria Abbitt Cold | Dr. Sanders white Appotmattox Co | Complained that Dr Sanders had beaten her, cut her with a knife & shot at her with a rifle | Maria had worked for Dr Sanders - she was discharged - had a row with Dr. Sanders son, which was compromised. On the 5th she passed Dr Sanders door, & inquired after a fellow servant. Dr Sanders ordered her away. Some words passed between them. Sanders struck her - drew his knife cut at her, & fineally cut her twice on the head. She bit Sanders finger They were fineally seperated - Maria went away Sanders, got his rifle & shot at Maria. Did not his her. She then came to Lynchburg & reported Sanders. | I had the Sanders arrested & brot before me. Cary Brown a magistrate being present & having satisfied me that the had set a day for the investigation of the case, & would have had Sanders arrested but for my order, I turned the case over to him, requiring him to hold Dr Sanders to answer an indictment at the next term of the quarterly Court. Will report action next month |
