Extract from report of John M. Langston, dated Aug. 13th 1867
"En-route to Culpepper Court House, Orange C.H., Charlottesville and Lovington, Va. I held a large meeting at Alexandria among the freed people, and did what I could towards impressing upon them the importance and duty of their making haste to raise the eleven hundred dollars now due on the lots upon which the Bureau has already built for them a school house, and upon which a second one is now in process of erection, also to be built by the Bureau.
At this meeting quite a sum of money was raised; and a committee of efficient men and women was appointed to superintend the collection of the full sum.
