Lynchburg V Sept 22d 1867

Colonel S F Chalfin
A A Genl 1st Military District
Colonel
On Thursday morning the 12th inst. John Marshall freedman came to my office and reported that Stanhope F Reid A B Dukes Edwin R King, William Magan and Patrick Doherty had the night previous entered the house of one Washington Parnell where himself and one Robert Hunt (cold) were and that Reid, Duke and King had set in upon Hunt and killed him for no offense whatever- that he himsself had been ordered to leave the house which he did but took refuge in some weeds where he could see an hear all that transpired. Being about to start for another County on duty I could not attend the case but larning that John C Murrell, Commonwealth's Atty for the County was in town I called upon him and directed him to have the parties arrested and attend to the investigation of the case.
Before leaving town I wrote him requesting him to make a report of the case and forward it with a full copy of the evidence to me.
As soon as practicable after my return, not hearing from Mr Murrell, I went to the C.H. and there learned that Hunt was not dead-- that Duke and Read had escaped-- that King Magan and Doherty had had a hearing before Justice Purrow on the 13th inst and that Purrow had bound them over to keep
