In Capt Shaum's division there is little change to report His paper and records are in good condition. Schools are closed and the colored people engrossed in caring for crops to the exclusion of other interests. Wis. Registry of marriage remains unchanged. Botetourt Co. being completed Bedford Co unfinished. There has been less appeal from the colored people for redress during this quarter than in the preceding and I regard their general condition as improving slowly. I have no complaint against any portion of Captain Shaum's administration of Bureau affairs during the quarter.
In the division of Lieut Stevenson the numerous cases arising in Appomattox Co of horse and mule claims in connection with his registration of that county have required his presence there during the larger part of the quarter. As elsewhere in the subdistrict matters pertaining to the freedpeople are generally very quiet. All the schools have closed to open October 1st. The work at the buildings in process of creation has been stopped until the leisure season of next quarter and so far as
