Being a registering officer I was sent on June 7th curr. year to Piedmonte Farm in Prince William Co by Lieut. W.S. Chase, then Bureau officer in Warrenton, to be present at the case between John B Norris landlord and Joseph Dobson tenant (the latter claiming to have been Union man and to be persecuted on that account), Lieut. Chase not having time to attend because of the press of business attending the commencement of registration, and report if there were any injustice done on acct of the Unionism of Dobson.

On arriving at Piedmont farm I found that John B. Norris had certainly not acted fair towards Dobson but that Dobson and more so D's family had retaliated by annoying Norris' family.  I then represented to both parties that a compromise might be made, if agreeable to them, more satisfactory than the judgment of the Justice of the Peace, Norris consented saying "that he bowed to the military authorities", although I told him that I [[strikethrough]] would [[/strikethrough]] did not order him to compromise but merely as a friend advised him, [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] but when I offered to let the case go before the Justice he would not, thus leaving the impression
