Lieutenant

I have the honor to report that on Sunday - the 13th inst - being called on by the Revd Charles King to give him, and the members of his congregation, protection in the use of what they claim to be their church property-  I as Military Commissioner - demanded the key of the Methodist Episcopal church in Colliers town, Rockbridge County, from certain parties who had it in possession, and opened the church doors for said Revd Charles King and his congregation -

After the service for the day had been concluded I returned the key to the above mentioned parties who previously had it and who claim to be the Southern Trustees for the said church - with the direction that Mr King shall be allowed to hold services in the church hereof in without hindrance until Genl Schofield's orders in the matter are known - provided that said Mr King does not interfere with the services of the Revd Mr Hammond - the Southern minister  -

This action of mine was based on my desire to preserve peace in the community and to protect the rights - either real or alleged - of a
