In compliance with instructions I have the honor to report that I have seen Thomas Maxwell Esq. who states that his letter to the Hon. Secy, of the War is true in every particular. Enclosed is a copy of the records of the county court regarding the cases tried. According to agreement with Mr Maxwell, he was to let me know when the case was called, but failed to do so, so that I was not present at the trial-

The case is as follows _ Mr Maxwell was appointed Post Master of Rectortown Station on the 16th day of September 1865. In November one James. E. Rector came to his private house and took eggs from him, and started off with him, Mr Maxwell stopped him and asked him if he had counted the eggs, as they were too high to give away or lose. Rector said all was right, and insisted that he should take them back. he took part of them and found some broken, which he refused to take back, and went into the house, Rector followed him into the house without his knowledge, as he came into the room he called him a dammed old union son of a bitch, and struck him with an egg in the face and struck him
