What I know concerning the affair of Mr Maxwell & the Messrs Rectors is thusly
William F. Rector & J. E. Rector came to this house (after some difference in the morning) & were admitted with a stick concealed under the coat of J. E. Rector. I heard a scuffle and on entering the room found William F. Rector holding Mr Maxwell & James E. Rector beating him over the head & face & the blood spouting in every direction. I advanced and asked what they were doing, to which W. F. Rector replied, Stand back, he shall be beat __. I then went to the door, to give the alarm when they made the second attack and again beat him in very brutal manner.
