Rectortown May 6th 67
Mr W. S. Chase
Dear Sir
In reply to inquiry in regard to the two Rector's & Thomas Maxwell

I can only say that the man was very badly treated & beat severely with sticks in his own house & that without any provocation sir. Maxwell head was severely cut & contused with sticks one held him whilst the other beat him, (I understand)

I was some three hundred yards from the house when I heard the cries of Murder, Murder, & people flocking to the house from the village, some appear to think the cause of it was on account of Maxwells Union proclivities
