Sir:
I have the honor to inform you that in compliance with instructions from Gen. Brown received through your office giving me direction in the matter of settlement in the case of Thomas Jefferson colored against parties in Louisa Co. for whipping him I have sanctioned the acceptance of one thousand dollars as a compromise of the matter by the attorneys of Thomas and one half of this sum as was originally agreed upon was paid to me for Thomas. Thomas did not appear at court as I think more might have been got. I transmit enclosed five hundred dollars for such disposition as you may make to get it to Thomas. I supposed he is living about twelve miles from Richmond on the Fredericksburg road.
Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servant
