He told the Freedmen, that they owed their
liberty to the South; that if there had been
no rebels, they would not have been freed,
and other remarks of similar force.

I charitably attribute the obscenity of his
remarks to his intoxicated condition at the
time.

In closing, I would respectfully invite
your attention to the enclosed letter of Saml.
Ford, Esq. [[? Int. Rev. Assessor]], who was present at the time, and heard the remarks 
made. I can procure other reliable evidence, should it be at all desired.
