Dear Sir;
In reply to your letter of June 1st in regard to the speeches made at Brunswick Court House, on April 22nd, I have the honor to state, that, I heard only part of Col. Mallery's speech, which so for as heard, was to the effect "that the Southern people were the only true friends to the freedmen." I recollect well his telling them to regard their old masters as their best friends, and other remarks to this effect.

After Col. M. ceased speaking, you were loudly called for, by freedmen and whites also, to which you responded as follows, as near as I can recollect, saying
