Captain,
I have the honor to return the enclosed papers with the information that on yesterdy I visited the house of John Givin on Black Creek some eighteen miles from this place and there saw William son of Charlotte Beard.
Givin says that immediately after the surrender of Lee's Army he informed Charlotte and her children that they were free and could go wherever they pleased but that, if they remained with him he would cloth and feed and provide for their wants as he had done while they were his slaves - under this agreement they all remained until the fall of 1865 when Charlotte and her two little girls left.  All that time Willliam refused to go and still wishes to remain with the family to which he seems to be much attached.
I talked with the boy himself and he told me that Mr. Givin had repeatedly told him he would not pay any wages for him and that he could go wherever he chose to go, but that he would
