6th There have been in successful operation eight day and three night schools during the past winter, which were colsed [closed] June 30th.

In every place I find them eager for schools and willing to do all in their power towards their own elevation, and were it possible, build their own school houses and employ their own teachers. But without money, land or permanent  employment they are, and will be for a time, unable to provide these means of instruction. They understand fully that Education is calculated to make them energetic and prosperous in business, faithful, laborious and intellectual  citizens, and that it will tend to develope their manhood, their moral and mental capacity, enabling them to secure their rights in the Nation and among the people with whom they live.

The Hospital at this place affords ample provision for those who require medical attention and aid.

The colored men are fully aware of the great change in political affairs, and from careful observation I have learned that, while they are respectfully inclined towards their former masters, when the time comes for men to vote, they will exercise that right with credit to themselves and for the interests of their State and Country.
