George Washington being sworn states that he saw Matilda Watson coming along the street in front of Mr. Martins about the 11th or 12th of July. Some words passed between them which he could not understand. He heard Mr. Martin ask her what she took his hammer away from his house for. She replied that she borrowed it from Mr. Flemming's little boy and thought it was Mr. Flemming's hammer. She asked him who said she stole the hammer. Mr. Martin made some answers and Matilda said anybody who said she stole the hammer told a lie. Mr. Martin then rose in a passion and began throwing stones at Matilda. He did not hit her but once with a stone. He then ran to her and began to beat her about the head with his fist. He could not make her stop talking and he followed her and beat her again and kicked her. After he left her the last time she called him a "nasty stinking low-lived dog."
