and wholly unjustifiable attack upon the barkeeper Perkins and another colored man named Thomas Harris there present in which the two colored men were severely injured.

By the interference of Bvt Lt Col Jordan and afterwards the assistance of the 1st Sergt of the Co. Nichols, the above named soldiers were [[strikethrough]] quieted [[/strikethrough]] brought to order and started away from the scene towards their camp distant about half a mile on the skirts of the town. The negroes of the town [[strikethrough]] were [[/strikethrough]] immediately became aware of the attack that had been made upon two of their color and gangs of them collected and in one or two cases pursued the soldiers to take revenge. This was stopped by the personal exertions of Col Jordan and afterwards a patrol was sent into town by the order of Lt Egbert which assisted in preserving the peace. The negroes were on that night much excited and there is evidence that they were instigated to riot by some white citizens.
