Am Register at Large for Prince Edward Co. On 9th inst after dark Col Jordan and myself were standing on the corner opposite Perkins' bar room. We heard some soldiers talking inside the bar room apparently objecting to some one paying for drinks. Didnt think it was more than a friendly dispute about who should pay. A few minutes afterwards Col Booker came out and asked Col Jordan to stop the disturbance. We went in - Col Jordan first. Mr. Hooper, five soldiers, two col'd men and a col'd boy was in the room. Perkins and Harris were the two col'd men. Do not know the names of the soldiers. I saw a tall soldier strike Geo. Perkins. There was great confusion. Col. Jordan got between Perkins and the soldiers trying to keep them off. A short soldier with a gallon tin pot struck Perkins twice with it. I took him by the collar and swang him away. The Corporal and another soldier seemed to be trying to keep things quiet - the other three were intoxicated, [[strikethrough]] but not [[/strikethrough]] I dont recollect seeing Harris struck - there was more scuffling going on.

Immediately afterwards the orderly Sergt of the Co. Nichols, came in and worked to restore order. The soldiers for a moment became quiet - they started out of the house and got to the corner. We followed the soldiers immediately. Col Jordan ordered the house to be closed. At the corner were quite a number of white citizens and colored men
