strike Sergt Stevens. I didn't see a colored man knocked down on the ground. There were other colored men in the room, about half a dozen, besides Perkins, and some white men. I helped Perkins out towards the back door. I saw Col. Jordan before that. I saw [[strikethrough]] Capt Knight [[/strikethrough]] Maj. Hooper before I saw Col. Jordan. Dont think Serg Stevens was very drunk the other soldiers were. Ord. Serg Nichols came in. I didn't see all that occurred in the room because I was taking charge of Perkins and had my back to the crowd. I was trying to keep Perkins from cocking his pistol and also to keep the man away from him. Col. Jordan ordered the men to leave the room. I saw no struggle. When I left the room I went with McCann immediately to camp. The other men didn't go with me. I didn't come to town again that night unless I went with the patrol - I don't recollect whether a patrol went to town that evening.

Came down on Tuesday morning with first patrol. Several soldiers and colored men were fighting. There was Private Weatherwax, Serg. Shaw - (he was struck,) Private Parker, Corporal Morris, Private Bow, that is all I recollect. Think there were about a hundred negroes. didn't see any white citizens except standing in their doors. Most of the negroes had sticks or clubs, soldiers had sticks. When the patrol went there the crowd dispersed. The patrol took charge of all the soldiers I have named and took them to camp. They were most of them under the influence of liquor.
