[[Mathews?]] Ct House Augst. 29th 1867

Sir
Yours of the 19th inst has been received and I hasten to reply. The order enclosed to me in regard to destitutes of the colored race heretofore supported by the Freedman's Bureau has been delivered to the Overseers of the poor. In consequence of the death of the late sheriff and an order from the Freedmen's Bureau in reference to the taxation by the County Court last year and [[state/? stay]] law, which has presented the collection of the interest on the fund they have at interest they have no funds in their treasury, and though the County Court has laid a levy for a nother year in consequence of the death of the sheriff and the difficulty of obtaining a successor there is now no one to collect the County tax. The Court is authorized to appoint a Collector of Taxes, but as yet they have been unable to find any person qualified and fitted for the trust who can take the oath prescribed by recent orders issued by General Schofield.

Yours Truly
Thomas M. Handey
Presiding Justice
