Baptist home mission - Three are in operation in this City - at Applie pie ridge there is also a school which now has a vacation until after the holidays - at Newtown and Middletown there seems to be a demand but the disinterestedness, if not the hostility, of the white inhabitants, have rendered their efforts thus far fruitless.  The progress of the Schools established are highly satisfactory, and will compare favorably with the same grade of white schools in or out of the State - The school in the building hired by the Bureau is in charge of Miss Martha Stoures, a strict diciplinarian, competent and indefatigable in her duties, and from present appearances, excellent results will be obtained therein -

2nd Division; 9th Sub District

1st. The general condition of the freedpeople in this division is perhaps as good as in either of the others of this sub District.  No considerable bodies of them are congregated in the same localities, and the people being well distributed in the farming country, they are generally employed constantly, and therefore can at least provide for themselves with the necessaries of life without assistance from the local authorities.

2d.  Captain Ripley the officer in charge, reports that full and complete justice is given to freedpeople in cases where they are interested against whites -  From affidavits made before me as Military Comr.
