suggested by the  District  Attorney and finding that the Treasury agent here still continued collecting the rents without noticing the ground rent & taxes in arrears (now for nearly three years) I turned to the deed of lease in order to see if I could not save the future rents as the past seemed unrecoverable and on January 17th of this year [[strikethrough]] having [[/strikethrough]] I called in valuers selected by myself & the tenant of the house (Mr. Strong) to ascertain if there was sufficient goods on the property if sold to pay the back rent & taxes whose valuation falling far short of the amount due, I then entered on the property in strict pursuance of the covenant of the Deed, before quoted, and took possession, the absolute property of the house & land as were intended by the covenant, in said cases. I then rented the property out to the tenant in the house at the time, at the same rent he had been paying the Treasury Agent, ($30. per month) and have received the rent from him from 1. Feb to 1. June, and was about to collect the rent for the Quarter from 1 June to 1. Sept. when the tenant (Mr. Strong) received a preemptory notice dated 23d Sept. from Chas. E. Johnston. Esq. Asst Supt Freedmans Bureau, here to vacate the premises on the 1st Oct. next, as it had been leased by him, to other parties, if not, "Military force would be used to eject him" — In referring this case to your adjudication & settlement — it may be proper to state [[strikethrough]] [[illegible]] [[/strikethrough]] that I took the oath of allegiance in 1863, under the Proclamation of that year — and that as Genl. Butler, then Commg this Dept. thought my case not sufficiently covered by this oath, of his own interposition and through
