General.
I have the honor to inform you that on or about Feb. 5th 1866. Bvt. Maj. H. C. Egbert 12th US Inft. stationed at Williamsburg Va. as Pro. Mar. Sub Disct. of the Peninsula, requested me to receive from Mr Backhouse a certain amount of money which he was ordered to collect for the heirs of Benj. Goldman (col'd) deceased residing in Gloucester County.

In accordance with his request I received Two hundred and thirteen 99/100 (213 99/100) dollars from Mr Backhouse and delivered the same immediately to Maj Egbert taking his receipt therefor.

The colored people for whose benefit the money was collected complain at this office that they have never received the same and Maj Egbert having informed me that he forwarded the money in question immediately upon its receipt to the Pro. Marshal of the Dis'ct at Fort Monroe. I would respectfully refer the above to you for such action as may be deemed proper.
