In accordance with his request I received two hundred and thirteen 99/100 ($213 99/100) dollars from Mr. Backhouse and delivered the same immediately to Maj Egbert taking his receipt therefor

The colored people for whose benefit the money was collected complain at this office that they have never received the same and Maj Egbert having informed me that he forwarded the money in question immediately upon its receipt to the Pro. Mars. of the Disct at Ft Monroe. I would respectfully refer the above to you for such action as may be deemed proper.
