I would further state that one of the principle witnesses for the Boys is somewhere in Richmond - another is in Salem, but neither of these have been summoned to appear at the examination before the Magistrate, although their testimony goes to prove, that the Boys simply acted in self defence. Bail has also been offered by responsible parties, for their appearance at any time, but reject by the Magistrate, who appears afraid to take action in the case, lest he might offend "Col" Preston, who is a prominent man of the county, and who, I understand is very anxious to have the Boys convicted and sent to the Penitentiary.
